Today’s featured award is the Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award, which recognizes credit unions that demonstrate a significant commitment to adult financial education.

This year’s winners are Western New York FCU and Municipal CU.

Western New York FCU is receiving the award in the category for credit unions with less than $50 million in assets. In 2016, Western New York FCU provided a number of free financial literacy workshops to both members and non-members. The workshops offered important financial information and included a question-and answer-segment, as well as complimentary take-away materials. Session topics focused on maximizing social security benefits, paying for college education, achieving a financially secure retirement, smart estate planning and first-time home buying.

Municipal CU is receiving the award in the category for credit unions with more than $1 billion in assets. Last year, the credit union expanded on its award-winning Financially Fit Educational Seminar Series to include new presentations, tools and opportunities for members. The series is presented in many different environments, from employer group sites to New York City classrooms and through one-on-one consultations. Credit score improvement, budgeting skills, and other areas that the credit union taught were combined with product utilization and follow-up consultations to ensure participants truly became “Financially Fit.”
