Nearly 50 young credit union professionals and service providers were in New York City last week for the Young Professionals Commission’s 2017 Summer Educational Summit. The event included networking opportunities and educational sessions led by leading credit union and cooperative leaders.

The event—which was sponsored by CUNA Mutual Group, Alloya Corporate FCU, TCAR and Cabot Creamery—began Tuesday, Aug. 8, with a pre-summit networking reception at the Mason Jar restaurant in Manhattan.

Wednesday morning kicked off with a presentation on young professional consumer banking habits and employment preferences, followed by presentations from CUNA Mutual Group and TCAR.

New York Credit Union Association VP of Governmental Affairs Michael Lieberman then provided an update on New York state and federal legislative issues.

Lieberman’s update was followed by a special lunch-and-learn session hosted by Cabot, a farmer’s cooperative in the Northeast. Farmer/owner Melissa Greenbacker spoke to attendees about the importance of cooperatives and the cooperative business model.

The event concluded with a panel discussion with three leading women in the New York credit union movement: Linda Armyn, SVP of corporate affairs at Bethpage FCU; Linda Levy, president/CEO of Lower East Side People’s FCU; and Lisa Morris, AVP of public relations and corporate communications at Hudson Valley FCU.

“I really enjoyed being part of this panel discussion,” said Morris. “Our next generation of credit union leaders are emerging, and they’re bringing with them a fresh new perspective on leadership. It was exciting to see the diversity in the room and I’m sure future Summits will be even more popular.”
