Several Recognition Awards will be presented to New York credit unions during the New York Credit Union Association’s virtual 2021 Annual Meeting & Awards Ceremony from 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 24.
Today’s featured award is the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award, which honors credit unions that strengthen local institutions and materially improve the lives of non-members through community outreach programs.
This year’s award winners include Horizons FCU, SeaComm FCU and Teachers FCU. Western New York FCU and Visions FCU are receiving honorable mentions this year. These credit unions displayed exceptional commitment to their communities and the credit union philosophy of “people helping people.”
Horizons FCU is receiving the award in the $50 million – $250 million asset category for its Reaching Out program. The credit union worked to provide emotional and financial relief to members of the community hit hard by COVID-19. Over the course of the year, Horizons fed over 1,500 meals to the community through food drives, and collected school supplies and winter apparel for children in their local elementary schools.
The past year has put a strain on a lot of people emotionally and mentally, as well as financially. In our eyes there was not one project we did this year that was more unique than another. What we found unique was the amount of people that were also willing to help us reach our goals for the fundraising.
SeaComm FCU is receiving the award in the $250 million – $1 billion asset category for its Pay-It-Forward Program. Throughout the course of the year, the credit union carried out random acts of kindness for members of their communities. These acts included purchasing meals for health care workers; providing backpacks and school supplies to students; delivering winter clothing to children in need; paying off layaway items during the holiday season; and much more.
This project has proven to be highly successful in having a positive impact on our local residents and generating a chain reaction of kindness in our region. At SeaComm, we believe we have a responsibility to help make the world a better place, and that starts with how we help our neighbors thrive every day.
Teachers FCU is receiving the award in the more than $1 billion asset category for its Supporting Local Communities through the Pandemic and Beyond initiative. Teachers’ numerous volunteer days helped support a variety of charitable organizations, including Habitat for Humanity and Island’s Harvest. The credit union also worked hard to provide meals to frontline workers and direct support to local businesses that have been struggling as a result of the pandemic.
In light of what was a very challenging situation, the entire Teachers organization came together cross-functionally, working toward one goal: to serve members and the larger community to the best of their abilities. As members and the community were struggling, Teachers was there providing solutions, assisting and truly caring about their needs.
