New York credit union advocates attending the 2022 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference met with New York Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York on Tuesday, a longtime friend and supporter of credit unions. Schumer restated his support of credit unions, saying that credit unions will “never be taxed over my dead body.”
And, Tuesday marked first day that masks were not required to be worn indoors in Washington, D.C. since the start of the pandemic.
Speaking with credit union advocates, Schumer reiterated his support for the SAFE Act, which has passed in the House of Representatives, but said that there are additional provisions that should be added before it can be passed in the Senate. Schumer also expressed support for the Credit Union Modernization Act, which would allow credit unions to expel dangerous or abusive members without the need for a membership vote.
Schumer also spoke directly with Oleg Lebedko, CEO of Ukrainian FCU, during the meeting (as pictured above). Lebedko emphasized to Schumer the need for additional support from the United States, as far as providing resources to Ukraine in response to the invasion by Russia.
