Credit unions and chapters can once again offer college scholarships to deserving young members with the New York Credit Union Association’s annual, statewide College Scholarship Program.

With just one application, college-bound members are able to easily apply for up to three scholarships:

  • the Association’s Statewide College Scholarship Program;
  • the participating credit union’s scholarship (if one is offered); and
  • the participating Chapter scholarship (if one is offered).

The Association can also help credit unions administer and grade their own scholarship program.

This year, the entire College Scholarship Program registration process for credit unions will be done online. Credit unions interested in participating in the 2020 program should visit the Association’s website for details and registration instructions. The deadline for registration and payment is Friday, Nov. 1, 2019.

All completed scholarship applications must be submitted to the Association by Jan. 24, 2020. Scholarship recipients will be announced in late April or early May.

Last year, participating credit unions awarded $21,500 in scholarships to 30 students through the program.

Tanya Buechner, director of marketing at SEFCU, said the Scholarship Program is a very important feature offered to credit unions each year.

“As college costs continue to rise, families are being forced to look for alternatives to pay for higher education,” said Buechner. “The New York Credit Union Association’s scholarship program recognizes students who excel in the classroom, on the field and as a leader, and students who receive these awards can focus on their studies and not how to pay tuition.”
