The 2020 CUNA GAC general session kicks off today, and New York Credit Union Association President/CEO William J. Mellin and Association Board Chair Ann Hynes, president/CEO of SPX FCU, carried the state’s flag during the opening ceremonies.

Following the opening ceremonies, CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle took the stage to offer his opening remarks, urging attendees to tell their stories of advancing communities and empowering financial well-being, highlighting advocacy and awareness as ways to promote the great work credit unions do locally. Nussle’s entire speech is available on CUNA’s Facebook page.

Today’s general session also featured National Credit Union Foundation Executive Director Gigi Hyland, who described how credit unions can meet members wherever they are in their financial lives to help them forge a path to a brighter future, CUNA reported on its website.

In a keynote address by best-selling author Marcus Buckingham, a respected advisor to employers in a range of fields, he encouraged attendees to focus on employees’ strengths instead of trying to improve their weaknesses.

On Sunday, photographer Platon shared stories of being in the same room as some of the most recognizable people who have ever lived during his ED (Filene) Talk. “I’ve seen power up close and personal, but I haven’t seen the magic ingredient to being a good person or a good leader in most of these people,” he said in his keynote address to attendees. “I think that a great member of society has to think of themselves as a servant of people in order to make things better.”

Also Sunday, Nussle welcomed 60 young credit union professionals selected to “crash” the GAC, thanking the young credit union leaders for their passion and taking questions from the group.

Last night, New York attendees had the opportunity to network with each other at the Association’s “Let’s Connect New York” event.
