New York state’s sexual harassment hotline is now live

A new statewide hotline for employees who believe they have been sexually harassed in the workplace is now live.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the launch of the hotline following legislation passed in March 2022, providing expanded sexual harassment protections for employees. As part of the legislation, the state’s Division of Human Rights was directed to establish a toll-free, confidential hotline for complainants of workplace sexual harassment.

The legislation also aims to strengthen protections for retaliation against victims of discrimination and makes it explicit that all public employers are subject to the Human Rights Law.

While employers may see an increase in the number of sexual harassment and discrimination claims related to the implementation of the new hotline, those with questions should consult with their legal counsel.

Employees can call the hotline, operated by the Division on Human Rights and staffed by pro bono attorneys, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The number is: 1-800-HARASS-3 (1-800-427-2773).
